Provincial Projects: Open to All Métis Youth from Across Alberta

Youth Entrepreneur Summer Camp
Project Type: For Youth 15 - 17 Years
Location: Edmonton
Start Dates: August 12 to August 18, 2009
Application Deadline: August 5, 2009
Description: Small business opportunities, business development, field trips and hands-on showcasing of a small business plan.

Environment Career Camp
Project Type: For Youth 15 - 17 Years who are returning to school in fall of 2009.
Location: Hinton
Start Dates: July 16 to August 8, 2009
Application Deadline: July 2, 2009
Description: Career exposure to environment occupations such as Fish and Wildlife Officer, Forest Technician, Park Warden and Environmental Auditor. Leadership skills, recreational activities, and related high school credits.

Projects for Northwestern Alberta (Regions 5 & 6)


Aboriginal Job Shadow Program
Project Type: For Youth 15 - 30 Years
Location: Grande Prairie
Start Dates: July 7 to August 18, 2009
Application Deadline: June 15, 2009
Description: Aboriginal youth will job shadow a number of occupations with employers in the city of Grande Prairie including: GP Regional College, Western Cree Tribal Council, Aguatera, City of Grande Prairie, Devon Canada, Service Canada and Métis Nation.

Aboriginal Junior Forest Rangers
Project Type: For Youth 16 - 19 Years
Location: Fort Vermillion and Slave Lake
Start Dates: June 22 to August 28, 2009
Application Deadline: June 1, 2009
Description: Skill development and work experience for a future career in forestry or natural resource management.

Projects for Northeastern Alberta (Regions 1 & 2)

Métis Academic Foundations Program
Project Type: For Youth 15 - 30 Years
Location: Lac La Biche
Start Dates: September 9, 2009 to January 31, 2010
Application Deadline: August 9, 2009
Description: Improve learning and life management skills in order to enter further training.

Aboriginal Junior Forest Rangers
Project Type: For Youth 16 - 19 Years
Location: Lac La Biche
Start Dates: June 22 to August 28, 2009
Application Deadline: June 1, 2009
Description: Skill development and work experience for a future career in forestry and natural resource management.

Emergency Response Personnel Summer Camp
Project Type: For Youth 15 - 17 Years who are returning to school in fall 2009
Location: Bonnyville
Start Dates: August 3 to August 7, 2009
Application Deadline: July 10, 2009
Description: First Aid/CPR certification, physical fitness and nutrition, career planning and exposure to emergency response occupations such as EMT, Police Search and Rescue, Firefighting, and Emergency Radio Broadcaster.

Training Projects for Central Alberta (Region 4)

Kids in the Hall
Project Type: For Youth At Risk, 15 - 24 Years
Location: Edmonton
Start Dates: Continuous Intake
Application Deadline: N/A
Description: Life skills, career planning, and job readiness integrated with work experience to assist youth in finding permanent employment or a return to school. Up to 52 weeks of employment readiness workshops and work experience for youth 18-25.

Health Sciences Transition Program
Project Type: For Youth 18 - 30 Years
Location: Edmonton
Start Dates: August 17, 2009 to February 26, 2010
Application Deadline: July 27, 2009
Description: Upgrading of English, Math and Science required for entry into a health sciences technology program, such as Medical Sonography, X-ray Technician, Lab Technician, LPN and more, at an Alberta post-secondary institution.

Métis Youth Leaders
Project Type: For Youth 15 - 18 Years
Location: Grande Cache, Barrhead
Start Dates: Fall 2009
Application Deadline: TBA
Description: After school program to target youth ages 15-18 at risk of dropping out, they will attain employability skills, homework skills, and the opportunity or obtain their class 7 or 5 drivers license in a positive and safe environment.

Training Projects for Southern Alberta (Region 3)

Ghost River Métis Summer Camp
Project Type: For Youth
Location: Calgary, Lethbridge, Red Deer and Medicine Hat
Start Dates: July 18, 2009
Application Deadline: -
Description: Phase One will held in four locations and will include time management, study skills, money management, living on your own, finding employment and safety training. Phase Two will be completed at a wilderness camp and will include survival skills, leadership and teamwork development, and cultural education.
